Gaming Narrative

Grand Theft Auto "Vice City"

For this week, I dusted off my playstation 2 and pulled out my favorite game from middle school."Vice City" was a game based off of the stories from a couple movies such as "Scarface" and "Carlito's Way". If you are a fan of shoots outs, mob bosses, gang wars and dealing drugs, then this is a game for you. Its based in a city called Vice City but it is a direct copy of Miami beach during the 1980's.
I really enjoy this game because of its narrative and how interesting the story is. Its a lot like watching a film where you can control the outcome, which may or may not be good. You also get to interact with other characters and they some times take you along for a wild ride and this can really get you invloved into the story.
Im not but much of a gamer but it was fun to go back and play something that I spent so much time playing back in middle school.

Broach School

Service Learning Outcome

I feel like my service learning at the Broach school was a great experience. I learned so much about the children and I really feel like I had a great impact on there day, maybe even their lives. I wasn't expecting to be working with so many students but I think that it enhanced the experience even more. We created a very nice ocean scene using all the images that the children had drawn, which consisted of fishing boats, clown fish, turtles, sharks and crabs. I thought that it was amazing to see the final product that had been created by the hands of almost 20 different students. I also found that some of the students were amazing artist and had really enjoyed this project. I am very fortunate to have been able to contribute to this service learning project and I look forward to doing something like this again in my future. I have always enjoyed teaching art and someday would love to become a teacher, so I feel that this experience gave me a good taste of what that life would be like.

Service Learning Project

My project is going to be more drawing based. I will bring materials for the kids to use (paper, pencils, marker, pastels). I will have the students pull names of animals out of a hat, they will then need to draw the animal that they pulled out of the hat. While the students are drawing, I will draw settings for the animals (farm, African plain, ocean floor). Once they are done drawing we will cut out their animals and place them in the correct setting.

Media in the body

After going to a presentation about voices of hip hop in art, I learned about Kehinde Wiley who uses this image to describe the status of the hip-hop world. The image communicates the current styles and attitudes of the hip hop world by using the male figure. Kehinde has a very different process of creating portrait art, he goes out and finds African Americans who visually represent the culture of hip hop and then paints them in the same style as Renaissance painters. This process is different because he is looking for a specific look instead of someone finding him and paying him to paint their portrait. This specific look (apparel)is a main focus of the hip hop lifestyle.

The Next Cool Thing

Pattern Recognition and Coolness

Go to school, do what you love, get rich and die. This has become a common occurrence in today's society, this has also become a very popular idea amongst the youth in America and other countries. Your status as a person plays a big role in determining how "cool" you are. Another big factor in determining coolness, is how new or edgy something can be. Because I am an art student(no cable and a ton of work), I definitely feel that I am missing out on all the new "cool" things happening in pop culture, such as Charlie Sheens outbursts and the latest on Mel Gibsons rants. I feel fortunate for not having to deal with this crap, I think its more important to live in my own life. There are however, a few patterns of coolness that i do get to pick up on here at art school. It could be anything from the latest in the illustration world to the most recent styles in the hipster community.

I believe the next cool thing is letting go of things that we've been trying to control or buy our whole lives. Let go of things that you don't need. You don't need your iphone or your urban outfitters clothes, you don't need your craft beers or your expensive fixed gear bike. I am one of these people who cant let go of my internet connection or my new pair of nikes. Try and live a life where you buy what you need to live, but not what you want to improve your social status. To do this you have to have the "i don't care attitude", which has become a popular idea in the youth of America.

Screenplay

Screenplay: Jackie Brown Directors Notes

Jackie Brown is a blaxploitation based in the mid 90's. It is film that is about a middle aged stewardess who is caught running money across the border for a black market guns salesmen. She is then forced to give of her employer for her freedom, she knows that if she does this, she will also be signing her own death warrant. So with the help from local bail bondsman, Jackie Brown comes up with a plan to trick the police and the gun runner. The result of the trick is Jackie getting rich, the police solving the case and the gun salesman dead.
This film is based around corruption, drugs, guns and money. It is a dirty film that will carry a lasting impression on viewers and you will never look at a flight attendant the same way again. The main character “Jackie Brown” is a very stern woman who demands a lot and get gets what she wants in the long run, she is a two timer and will take advantage of you if she has too.
I would want the character's to work around “Jackie” and she will run the show as if it were her own. She would also be the smartest person in the film and would make fools out of all the other characters especially “Ordell” and his gang. The film would also be two sided, one side would display a sense of class and the other side would display a dirty reputation, then at the end of the film these two sides would converge to form the final conflict of Ordell getting his money back from Jackie.
Jackie Brown is a very attractive black woman in her mid forties, though she looks like she is in her mid thirties. I think that an aged Halle Berry would play the part very well because of her strong personality and very attractive looks. She is also a good actress and would need to play the role of a powerful black woman a not so powerful situation, which would be similar to Berry's style in the film Swordfish.
Ordell is a black business man who is not making his money in a honest way, he is actually a black market gun salesman. He is a very clean cut cut man with a good sense of style, he looks classy but his he has a very classless personality. When I think of this character it really reminds me of Denzel Washington's character in Training Day. So feel that Washington would be perfect for this role in the film.
I think that these two entertainers would work very well together on screen and would bring forth the energy and emotions needed to convey the message of this film. The film would be a direct representation of criminal life in southern california during the 1990's, so all the filming would take place on location. This would help create a very authentic feel.

Lolita

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

I feel guilty for saying I liked this book, but I really thought it was interesting in a sick and twisted way. I thought it had a very original plot that can really get a rise out of readers or “Humbert's Jury”. I felt dirty reading this book and it really made me think about Humberts lack of morals and how he thinks its okay to fall in love with his little nyphets.
At first I couldn't understand why a successful, wealthy and attractive young man would have such a odd obsession with nine to fourteen year old girls, but as I read on I discovered that Humbert doesnt think he has a problem and he finds it unfair that a man can sleep with a seventeen year old but not with a twelve year old. I also found it very disturbing that he married his wife because she had features that reminded him of a young girl.
“Although I told myself I was looking merely for a soothing presence, a glorified pot-au-feu, an animated merkin, what really attracted me to Valeria was the imitation she gave of a little girl. She gave it not because she had divined something about me; it was just her style—and I fell for it.” In this passage you get a good sense of his problem and how morally degrading this novel is. You aslo learn how professional he is at keeping his problem a secret.
I feel as if Humbert represents everything that is wrong, but you cant blame him because he is sick in the head and this really reminds me of the mentally ill child killer in Fritz Langs “M”. After sometime I begin to feel disturbed by the reading and its lack of moral fiber.
Another segment of the reading that got to me was in chapter nine, where Humbert describes Lolitas nymphet qualities and his plans to lure her in. At this point was when I began to grow angry with the character's sickness and I began to wonder if it was more like an obsession.
